A Day in the Life of a Production Operative at Bri-Stor Systems

Seven years ago, Tom Purle started his career at Bri-Stor Systems as a General Operative. Through hard work and determination, Tom is now Production Team Leader, managing a team of Production Operatives converting fleets of vehicles. Having worked as a Production Operative for five years before his promotion, Tom speaks to us about what it’s like to be in his team:

“When I started converting vans, there was so much to learn. During the van fitting process, each member of the team is assigned a certain area to work on, from wheel arches, cutting windows to fitting sinks or racking. As time went on, I had the opportunity train on many different van fitting projects and various areas of the build, including learning to fit electrics.

“When you first start at Bri-Stor Systems, or when you are placed in a new area, you shadow an experienced member of the team on fitting that particular part of the van until you feel confident enough to do the job on your own. You can learn to fit everything from plumbing to electrics and heaters.

“The longer builds are what I am working on at the moment, welfare vans that need a toilet, sink, heater and safety locks all fitting, so I spend a day putting together each area with my team and testing the vehicle afterwards, before it is checked and signed off, ready for delivery to the customer. It gives me such job satisfaction to see a van come in as an almost empty shell and see it go back to the customer all kitted out and ready to be used.

“As with any job, working to timeframes to make sure we deliver a quality product on time to the customer can sometimes be stressful, but we have such a great team that keep you going; we have a laugh while getting the job done.

“One of the best things about working here is the amount you can learn. I came to Bri-Stor never having worked in the industry before, and have now been trained to fit every part of the van, and even participated in courses to enhance my knowledge. That’s why I have now progressed to the role of Team Leader, as I have worked on each area of a build, I can oversee what my team are doing and help to get the job done as a team.

“I would recommend to anyone to come and work as a Production Operative at Bri-Stor Systems, the skills you learn such as using hand tools, learning the basics of plumbing and electrics are skills you have for life. The team here are fantastic and will go out of their way to help you. Over my time here I’ve not only built my skills but my confidence too.

“My next steps are to keep pushing myself to learn and be the best Team Leader I can be, and eventually when I am ready, I hope to become a Group Leader here at Bri-Stor Systems and have a long career here.”
